John McAuliff - Let's hope ABT fares better with the Obama Administration than the New York Philharmonic last year. Licensing policy for US cultural groups is still mired in the restrictive policies of the Bush Administration. As a result only the orchestra and technical staff were permitted to travel, not the members of the Philharmonic Society whose support made the performances possible. Had even the Clinton rules been restored, they could have gone. The President is long overdue in allowing unrestricted travel for cultural, educational and other non-tourist purposes. relevantmatters - Let me get this straight: The union is making a fuss about a false pay discrimination against the female theatre wardrobe, hair and makeup workers, but ignores a real hiring discrimination against men? As for pay equity for women in general: Many economists explain women's 78 cents to men's dollar (women's median pay vs. men's median pay) as resulting from the choices both women AND men make in the job market. Women, more often than men, choose the best-paying jobs from among the jobs that interest them the most. By contrast, men, more often than women, pick the most interesting jobs from among the jobs that pay the most. But why do women continue to make these choices? Perhaps more important, why are so many women able to make these choices and help create the gender wage gap? Despite feminist groups' 40-year-old demand for equal wages for women, millions of married women still choose to have no wages at all. In fact, according to Dr. Scott Haltzman, author of The Secrets of Happily Married Women, stay-at-home wives, including those who are childless, constitute a growing niche. "In the past few years,” he says in a CNN August 2008 report at
http://tinyurl.com/6reowj, “many women who are well educated and trained for career tracks have decided instead to stay at home.” (“Census Bureau data show that 5.6 million mothers stayed home with their children in 2005, about 1.2 million more than did so a decade earlier....” at
http://tinyurl.com/qqkaka.) As full-time mothers or homemakers, these women earn zero wages. How can they afford to do this while in many cases living lives of luxury? Virtually any teenager knows the answer: “They are supported by their husband.” So if millions of wives can work for zero wages, millions of other wives can work for low wages in full-time or part-time work, can refuse overtime and promotions, can take more unpaid days off — all the while lowering women's average pay — all because they are supported by husbands who must earn more than if they'd remained bachelors — which is how MEN help create the wage gap. LA Theatre Works Radio Theatre Series Airs Lavery's FROZEN, 7/10 2010/07/05
Posted: 7/30/2010
Barry Mills - I found this piece to be deceptively challenging. I had to listen to it twice to get the nuance of the interplay of themes between characters. The phase "sin or symptom" (forgiven or excused) reverberates throughout. In the final scene when Nancy, and Agnetha exchange observations about Ralph, one wonders who is the more honest with their feelings. Nancy is less articulate, but more on-target, and Agnetha is at once, evasive, and cold in her professionalism toward both Nancy and Ralph. It is the more significant irony that Agnetha asks of Nancy for the same sort of empathy and compassion that her professionalism and personal issues, denies Ralph. It is both startling and poignant that one feels the full depth of anguish that Ralph’s realization of the impact of his crimes has on other people. I can appreciate the pain seeing what the crime has caused, without condoning the crime. One is at a loss as to whether treatment or forgiveness are adequate to the task of reconciling the viciousness of the crime has on the conscience of the actor. It is a troubling Catch-22, by being unaware of his actions, Ralph is eligible to be treated for the illness, but the moral conviction following, even a retroactive awareness, of the effect of his behavior on others results in the nearly unbearable burden of remorse and guilt. Both Nancy and Agnetha withhold what they purport to offer Ralph: forgiveness, or treatment. Forgiveness would require Nancy and Ralph to bear the burden of loss and regret together, and treatment, would a least require Agentha and Ralph share of intimacy and empathy. Indeed, Agentha betrays her own premise in acknowledging that remorse is part of the treatment for an illness. One would not need relief of remorse, if they did not appreciate that the crime was wrong. In this line of reasoning Ralph is no more accountable for causing pain and suffering than a surgeon in the act of healing, because he did not perceive it to be wrong (at the time). Lavery seems to suggest that we are accountable for our actions, whether we're aware of their moral implications, or not. I was left with the haunting question: who or what will be there for anyone, in the event we become aware, even, and especially, after-the-fact, of the effects of our actions on others is contrary to our "intentions?"

Don Treact - Because of the extreme power draw for analysis of the U.S. first meeting Jessica Fletcher, one street car driver had to brake for a standard reason just before a small hill and, with the power drain taking place, didn't make it up the hill. It's on the hill with large blocks securing it, since they don't know how to go backwards. The book store owner (per the credit---many believed he was just a customer) fully counts as he tells Jessica he wants her to sign eight copies "in case you ever become somebody." That's one more copy than the days in the week, so, represents a problem with purity of mind. A mind unlike hers would be uncomfortable with the number eight during a scheduled event on a week's day. Jessica is not, so, completely different. But, no time on this, since there's the entire problem of Preston Giles letting Ashley Vickers come to the costume party, knowing of her recent affair with Captain Caleb, but writing off the humiliation to Louise. All of which in turn both has Jessica to Preston Giles, and influences Captain Caleb for the remaining decisions to his life.

Don Treact - Huge drain on the Great Lakes power grid. Lights dim 30-40%. Dishwashers shut off. Refrigerators make noises. Elevators slow. Street lamps go to yellow. Traffic signals are dimmed. Neon signs pale. Radios fuzzy. Street cars slow. Smaller sparking at jump points. It's that time of the day when the U.S. first meeting Jessica Fletcher has to be thought about. Since the bus driver so clearly says "that's how it works" to mean the entire working of something like the Wizard of Oz's hot air balloon, and says it as Jessica has begun to overtly pursue facts and suspects on her own, the parallel probably is there. It's easy to then consider that it's a parallel to do with Jessica's writing the novel. In the actual movie, Dorothy can return to Kansas simply by using her own resources, and so Dorothy is peerless. But Preston Giles is peerless, which requires that Jessica receive something from him if the parallel is really considered.

Joanna - I didn't know about the down-sized orchestra when I attended Wedensday's matinee. As the lights dimmed and I settled in for the opening notes, I immediately wondered where the "swell" of the ocrhestra was. On the way home, I commented to my family that.the music somehow (somewhere?) felt 'thin." Although I feel validated this morning after reading this page,I grieve for what might have been. Also "thin?" Wednesday's Riff. It was hard to imagine his devotion to Tony, to his gang, and the neighborhood...he seemed oddly out of place in appearance and performance. But kudos to Anita and Maria, the spectacular dance numbers (oh! the dance at the gym!) and the sweet surprise of this version of "I Feel Pretty."

This recording is far superior to the Scottish one, I will cherish it always, and recommend it highly to everyone who would frequent this website.. Broadway's VICTOR/VICTORIA To Receive Blu-Ray Release 7/27 2010/05/15
Posted: 7/29/2010
John H. - I received the Blu-ray on July 27. Be warned that this is NOT the same performance that is on the regular DVD. The DVD version has a much more polished look to it. The performance on the Blu-ray version has jumpy camera moves, awkward and hurried zooms, and the audio track is HORRIBLE. You can hear the singing very well but you can barely hear the spoken dialogue or most of the orchestration. You can barely hear any audience laughter, which makes the jokes seem to fall flat. Even if the disc I got is an aberration and the sound quality is better on the rest of the Blu-rays, the performance is not as good as the one on the DVD. Also, the bonus features on the DVD did not get carried over to the Blu-ray. No idea why. Both versions were released by Image Entertainment, the company that so far has refused to answer my emails about why the Blu-ray was so poorly done. I think the performance on the DVD was a filmed "safety show" to cover for technical glitches that might occur during the next night's performance (the one on the Blu-ray) which was broadcast live on television in Japan. The "live" show would explain the lack of editorial polish. SKIP, SKIP, SKIP this Blu-ray. The DVD is ten times better. The picture quality on the Blu-ray, however, is stunning.

Mary Lois - A superb show from beginning to end! Stritch and Peters were matched by a first-rate cast and a knockout production. An exquisite theatrical bauble about love in its many forms, and life in its many stages--with Sondheim's wit and elegant music too!

Sandra Dee - I'm very aggravated at the way the two foxes and raccoon were treated in your show last night ?? The first thing you need to know is these animals are very freaked out . So when you approach them with fast movements and loud chatter it freaks them even more. I would like to see you cover there cages with a sheet or something after capture and during transport. Also your so called oiled raccoon ?? had no oil on it what so ever. If you want me to continue to watch your show you are going to have to change treatment methods

Weddington Street Presents 'Debbie Reynolds: Alive & Fabulous' 9/23-10/3 2010/07/28

Frank DeCavalcante - Debbie Reynolds is one of the most wonderful performers around. I have loved her since her early days at MGM, and I have been a fan ever since then, watching her grow and evolve as an actress and entertainer. She was a delight in Irene on Broadway, and has shown depth and pathos in her varied movie roles. In her later years, she was always terrific in her far too rare tv performances, most notably as Debra Messing's mother in Will and Grace. She is always a scintillating guest on talk shows, and one of the funniest interviews I ever saw was a joint tv show featuring Carrie Fisher and her. I have always thought a show featuring Debbie and her daughter would be fantastic. I hope this new venture is a huge success, and she eventually takes it on tour so her many fans can attend.

reality check - That guy looks nothing like Harry Reems. Harry Reems was olive complected, muscular, had thick wavy hair, his moustache was enormous, and had a hairy chest. He was literally a stud & this guy is a dud. The guy here is pasty, doughy, bare-chested, balding, and has a caterpillar moustache. Ick!

THE MACHINE - DID YOU HELP ME IMPROVE THIS SHAKIRA? (COPYRIGHT- THE MACHINE). I KNOW I DID A PRETTY GOOD JOB BUT THIS IS FABULOUS!! Love, the ever ending radiance of the blossoming spring A heart with the pouring meandering Flowing everlasting, the lightness Gliding in the ever flowing winds, new direction Peacefully, gracefully Upon the radiance of the enlightenments, the entires Never to mistaken Mist fullness, warmth of the breeze of seas in the luminescence in the dusk of desires Up forth, bold, she shines forever A waterfall on the springs of the pure and enduring hearts of all our compassion Giving to the chase, the fun, the cheerful spirits in playful affection Laying to rest on the fields, the perfume, the scents, the hearts beat as one Eye meets eyes, like the golden sparkling gems in a foggy mist of every embracing joy A breeze blows forth, warmth, gently caressing The winds of time, never to be mistaken For the ages we grow and in the growth we gain Melding and turning while learning we see Floating freely, bonded forever, never to be broken, in the skies as one
