Public's INTO THE WOODS Headed to Broadway's Al Hirschfeld Theatre?

Is the Public's Shakespeare in the Park production of INTO THE WOODS headed for 45th Street? The New York Post's Michael Riedel says today that the show is raising money and looking toward the Hirschfeld Theatre, which currently houses a limited return run of FELA!; the Fela Kuti-inspired musical closes August 4 and no other show is lined up as of yet. SOUND OFF: 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony

Theatricality does not come on a scale much grander - and available to an audience much wider and larger, natch - than by way of the heady and hallucinogenic images concocted by visionary, Academy Award-winning British director Danny Boyle for the 2012 Olympics opening ceremony tonight. A hill, a heath, dozens of sheepherders and milkmaids below a large, looming tree set the scene for the start of the big, big show - and it was definitely very, very big. All of this countryside accoutrement signaled the entrance for Sir Kenneth Branagh, with sharp top hat and lit cigar, portraying noted industry king Isambard Kingdom Brunel, as he physically and metaphorically ushered in the new age in this culturally and historically-inspired phantasmagoria - setting the proceedings into high gear with a particularly impassioned and spine-tingling reading of one of the most moving and memorable passages from all of literate in a thrilling Prospero moment from Shakespeare's THE TEMPEST. And that was just the first five minutes!

Darlene Love Suffers Heart Attack Before NJ Performance

According to published reports, Broadway veteran Darlene Love suffered a heart attack last weekend before a performance at Tim McLoone's in Asbury Park, New Jersey. After experiencing stomach pains, the singer took asprin to make it through her performance. It wasn't until the following day when she was taken to the hospital that she learned that she had a heart attack.

Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's beloved musical INTO THE WOODS, the second show of The Public's 50th Anniversary season at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park, began previews this week and will run for five weeks through Saturday, August 25. Featuring an all-star cast including Donna Murphy, Amy Adams, Denis O'Hare, and Jessie Mueller, there is already lots of buzz about a potential transfer to Broadway.

Two-time Tony Award winner John Cullum (for Shenandoah and On the Twentieth Century; additional nominations for Urinetown, 110 in the Shade and On a Clear Day You…; Wilder at PH), Darren Pettie (This and Spatter Pattern at PH, Butley on Broadway, "Mad Men") and Sarah Sokolovic (Drama Desk Award nominee for The Shaggs at PH) will star in the New York premiere of DETROIT, a new play by Lisa D'Amour (2011 Pulitzer Prize finalist for this play, 2011 Steinberg Playwright Award winner for her body of work, Obie Award winner for Nita and Zita). Also in the cast are Oscar and Tony Award nominee Amy Ryan (Gone Baby Gone, "The Office," On the Mountain at PH) and Emmy Award nominee David Schwimmer ("Friends," "Band of Brothers," PH debut). Directed by Obie Award winner Anne Kauffman (Maple and Vine at PH, The Thugs, Stunning, Naked Angels' This Wide Night), previews will begin Friday, August 24 at Playwrights Horizons' Mainstage Theater as the first production of the theater company's new season.

SELENA Star Lupe Ontiveros Dies at 69

According to The Huffington Post, Lupe Ontiveros, star of such films as 'Selena' And 'As Good As It Gets,' has died at age 69. The actress had been reportedly suffering from liver cancer. She is survived by her husband and three adult children. (more...)
