3) SISTER ACT to Play Final Broadway Performance August 26

Producers Whoopi Goldberg and Stage Entertainment have announced that the Broadway musical SISTER ACT will play its final Broadway performance on Sunday, August 26, 2012, prior to kicking off a North American tour on October 2 at Toronto's Ed Mirvish Theatre. Upon closing after a 16-month run, the Broadway production will have played 28 previews and 561 performances at the Broadway Theatre (1681 Broadway). (more...)

5) Audra McDonald Placed on Vocal Rest Through 7/3; Alicia Hall Moran Covers 'Bess' in PORGY & BESS

Producers of The Gershwins' PORGY AND BESS, the 2012 Tony Award winner for Best Revival of a Musical, announced today that Audra McDonald has been ordered on a period of complete vocal rest by her doctor through the end of the month. As a result of performing with a respiratory infection last week, her vocal cords have become inflamed to a point where she cannot sing. Dame Helen Mirren is currently considering a role as Queen Elizabeth II in THE AUDIENCE, a play about the Queen's reign so far by Peter Morgan (The Queen, Frost/Nixon) in the West End this fall and on Broadway in spring 2013, according to the New York Post. 12) STAGE TUBE: On This Day 6/20- THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE

Today in 2004, Thoroughly Modern Millie closed at the Marquis Theatre, where it ran for 903 performances. Thoroughly Modern Millie is a musical with music by Jeanine Tesori, lyrics by Dick Scanlan, and a book by Richard Morris and Scanlan. Based on the 1967 film of the same name, it tells the story of a small-town girl, Millie Dillmount, who comes to New York City to marry for money instead of love - a thoroughly modern aim in 1922, when women were just entering the workforce. The production subsequently won six 2002 Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Actress in a Musical for Sutton Foster. (more...)
