Merwin Goldsmith Joins Broderick and Moreno in THE STARRY MESSENGER; Previews Now Begin 10/26

The New Group's production of The Starry Messenger has welcomed new cast member Merwin Goldsmith, who has replaced Jonathan Hadary.  The Kenneth Lonergan play stars Matthew Broderick and Catalina Sandino Moreno, and is now set to begin previews two days after the previously scheduled date on October 26 at Theatre Row.

A production spokesperson has indicated that there may be a possibility of a later opening date (currently scheduled for November 16), however no official announcement has been made.

Additional cast and creative team members have been announced for The New Group's THE STARRY MESSENGER, starring Matthew Broderick and, as previously reported,

Broderick and Moreno and now Goldsmith, will be joined on stage by J Smith Cameron, Stephanie Cannon, Kieran Culkin, Grant Shaud, and Missy Yager. It will feature set design by Derek McLane, costume design by Mattie Ullrich, lighting design by Jason Lyons, and sound design by Shane Rettig.

In The Starry Messenger, facing a stagnant marriage and a drowning career, Mark Williams (Broderick) is stuck teaching astronomy in the basement of the Hayden Planetarium. When a chance meeting with a young mother (Moreno) knocks them both out of orbit, their lives begin to realign in ways they never could have predicted.

This production marks Lonergan's return to The New Group following This is our Youth in 1996 and is the first stage collaboration with childhood friend, Tony Award-winning actor Matthew Broderick. Lonergan received Drama Desk nominations for Lobby Hero and This is Our Youth, and was nominated for screenwriting Oscars for You Can Count On Me and Gangs of New York.

As currently scheduled, the production will run on Theatre Row from October 24-December 12, with an official opening on November 16.  For more information and to purchase tickets, visit thenewgroup.org.

Merwin Goldsmith's theatrical credits, spanning nearly four decades include, on Broadway: Ain't Broadway Grand, Grand Hotel, Me and My Girl, 70, Girls, Slab Boys, the 1940s Radio Hour, Dirty Linen and New-Found Land, Rex, Trelawny of the "Wells, The Visit, Comedy, Mini's Boys, and Leda Had a Little Swan.  Off Broadway and regional credits include: 70, Bloomer Girl, Louisiana Purchase Sitting Pretty, Let 'Em Eat Cake, Of Thee I Sing; Yours, Anne; The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, and Merrily We Roll Along.
