NYPSI Hosts Special FREUD'S LAST SESSION Event 2/21

NYPSI-Hosts-Special-FREUDS-LAST-SESSION-Event-20010101

The New York Psychoanalytic Society & Institute is set to present a discussion and Q&A with Mark St. Germain, the playwright of FREUD’S LAST SESSION; Jack Thomas, a producer of the play; The Rev. Daniel Simons of Trinity Wall Street; and psychoanalyst and NYPSI member Dr. Fred Sander. NYPSI member Dr. Daniel Prezant will moderate. This very special event will be held on Tuesday, February 21st from 7:30 to 9pm at The New York Psychoanalytic Society & Institute, 247 East 82 Street (between Second & Third Ave.)

All tickets are $10 and RSVPs are accepted at admdir@nypsi.org.

Winner of the 2011 Off Broadway Alliance Award for Best Play, FREUD’S LAST SESSION is currently in its second smash year at NYC’s New World Stages (340 West 50th Street), starring Mark H. Dold and Martin Rayner, directed by Tyler Marchant. Additional productions of FREUD'S LAST SESSION are already set to open into 2013 in major markets across the nation and around the world, including London, Madrid, Tokyo, Rio de Janeiro, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Chicago, Seattle, Indianapolis, and Pittsburgh.

FREUD’S LAST SESSION centers on legendary psychoanalyst Dr. Sigmund Freud, who invites the young, rising academic star C. S. Lewis to his home in London. Lewis, expecting to be called on the carpet for satirizing Freud in a recent book, soon realizes Freud has a much more significant agenda. On the day England enters World War II, Freud and Lewis clash on the existence of God, love, sex, and the meaning of life – just two weeks before Freud chooses to take his own. Not just a powerful debate, this is a profound and deeply touching play about two men who boldly addressed the greatest questions of all time. Mark St. Germain’s celebrated new play was suggested by the bestselling book The Question of God by Harvard’s Dr. Armand M. Nicholi, Jr.

Playwright Mark St. Germain has written the plays Camping with Henry and Tom (Outer Critics Circle and Lucille Lortel Awards), The Best of Enemies, Out of Gas on Lover’s Leap, and Forgiving Typhoid Mary. With Randy Courts, he has written the musicals The Gifts of the Magi, Johnny Pye and the Foolkiller and Jack’s Holiday. TV credits include Writer and Creative Consultant for The Cosby Show. Mark co-wrote the screenplay for the acclaimed film Duma, and he directed and co-produced the documentary My Dog: An Unconditional Love Story featuring Richard Gere, Glenn Close and Edward Albee, among many others.

The New York Psychoanalytic Society & Institute's position as the oldest psychoanalytic organization in the Americas parallels its global leadership role in the history of psychoanalysis and its influence on the cultural and intellectual life of New York City. The Society was founded in 1911 by A.A. Brill, one of the first practicing psychoanalysts in the United States and the first translator of Freud into English. In 1931, the Institute was established to oversee formal training. NYPSI was recently recognized as one of the 20 best lecture series and venues in the city by Time Out New York. NYPSI's mission is to provide the highest level of psychoanalytic training to mental health professionals, promote excellence in psychoanalytic research and offer a range of educational, advisory and affordable therapeutic service programs to the New York community.

FREUD’S LAST SESSION is presented Off-Broadway by Carolyn Rossi Copeland, Robert Stillman and Jack Thomas. The performance schedule is Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings at 8pm; with matinees Wednesday at 2:30pm, Saturday at 2pm, and Sunday at 3pm. Tickets are $65 and are available by calling 212-352-3101 or through www.FreudsLastSession.com.
