Photo Flash: The New Group Presents A LIE OF THE MIND

The New Group proudly presents Sam Shepard's A Lie of the Mind directed by Ethan Hawke as the second production in its 2009-2010 season. This production plays a limited Off-Broadway engagement through - March 20 at The New Group @ Theatre Row (410 West 42nd Street), with Official Opening Night set for Thursday, February 18 at 7:00 PM. This production marks the first New York revival since the play's 1985 award-winning debut.

Blinded by jealousy and rage, Jake believes he may have murdered his wife. While Jake seeks refuge in the home of his unstable mother, his brother Frankie goes to investigate and soon finds himself caught in the confusing currents of revenge and longing. A Lie of the Mind, noted by Shepard as "a love ballad, a little legend about love," depicts two families shaken by sudden violence.

A Lie of the Mind features Keith Carradine (B'way: Dirty Rotten Scoundrels; TV: "Dollhouse"),

Josh Hamilton (at The New Group: Hurlyburly, Things We Want), Marin Ireland (B'way: After Miss Julie, reasons to be pretty - Tony® nomination), Laurie Metcalf (B'way: November - Tony nomination; Film: Toy Story 3), Alessandro Nivola (Film: Mansfield Park, Face/Off), Maggie Siff (Off-B'way: Or, TV: "Sons of Anarchy"), Frank Whaley (Film: Pulp Fiction, Swimming with Sharks) and Karen Young (Off-B'way: A Lie of the Mind - original cast; TV: "The Sopranos").

Writer, director and actor Sam Shepard's playwriting credits include the Pulitzer Prize-winning Buried Child, which won the 1986 Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and Drama Critics' Circle Awards. His other plays include Curse of the Starving Class and True West (Pulitzer Prize® nominee, Tony Award). A Lie of the Mind opened at the Promenade Theater in 1985 and won with the Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and New York Drama Critics' Circle Awards.

Accomplished actor, writer and director Ethan Hawke's directing credits include: Jonathan Marc Sherman's Things We Want at The New Group (2007-08 season), Lisa Loeb's "Stay" music video (1994), and the films Straight to One (1994), Chelsea Walls (2001) and The Hottest State (2006). In 1992, Hawke co-founded Malaparte Theatre Company (nonprofit theater company in NYC), where he is Artistic Director.

Set Design is by Derek McLane (B'way: Grease, I Am My Own Wife; Off-B'way at The New Group: The Starry Messenger, Groundswell, Rafta, Rafta..., Aunt Dan and Lemon, numerous others), Costume Design is by Catherine Zuber (B'way: The Royal Family, South Pacific - Tony Award, The Light in the Piazza - Tony Award), Lighting Design is by Jeff Croiter (B'way: Kiki and Herb: Alive on Broadway; Off-B'way: Miss Witherspoon, Danny and the Deep Blue Sea) and Sound Design is by Shane Rettig (Off-B'way at The New Group: The Starry Messenger, Groundswell, Rafta, Rafta..., Rich Boyfriend). This production features Original music composed and performed by Shelby and Latham Gaines.

The New Group (Scott Elliott, Artistic Director; Geoff Rich, Executive Director): The 2009-2010 season began with Kenneth Lonergan's The Starry Messenger featuring Matthew Broderick, which enjoyed an extended run. The 2008-2009 season featured the U.S. premiere of Kevin Elyot's Mouth to Mouth, Eugene O'Neill's Mourning Becomes Electra and the critically acclaimed Groundswell.
