Primary Stages Announces New World Premieres in 2013 - HARBOR, THE YANKEES and More

Primary-Stages-Announces-New-World-Premieres-in-2013-20010101

Primary Stages (Casey Childs, Founder & Executive Producer; Andrew Leynse, Artistic Director; Elliot Fox, Managing Director) announces the first three plays of their 29th Season. In launching their season, the award-winning company will present three new premieres.

HARBOR
A New York City Premiere of a new comedy
by Chad Beguelin, directed by Mark Lamos
July - September 2013 at Primary Stages at 59E59 Theaters

When fifteen-year-old Lottie and her ne'er-do-well mother Donna drop in unannounced on the beautiful Sag Harbor home of Donna's brother and his new husband, all hell breaks loose. The bonds between kith and kin are tested in this alternately biting and touching comedy about the constantly shifting nature of the meaning of family. Harbor is from playwright Chad Beguelin, the author/lyricist of Broadway's The Wedding Singer and the lyricist for Elf; and Mark Lamos, the director of Primary Stages hits Black Tie, Indian Blood and Buffalo Gal.

THE YANKEES**
A World Premiere of a new play
conceived by Fran Kirmser
written and directed by Eric Simonson
September - October 2013 at a theater TBA

Join us for the World Premiere of a new play from the creators of Broadway's Lombardi and the director of Primary Stages hit String of Pearls. The Yankees tells the generational story of a most extraordinary baseball family, and the game itself. Follow the revered New York Yankees Yogi Berra as he struggles to keep the focus on the team, transgressing the tricky world of dreams, celebrity, and the ever-changing landscape of this beloved American pastime.

(** Working Title)

A WORLD PREMIERE COMEDY
written by and starring Charles Busch, directed by Carl Andress
January - March 2014 at Primary Stages at 59E59 Theaters

Primary Stages is pleased to welcome back our favorite farceur Charles Busch, the author of Primary Stages' hits You Should Be So Lucky and Olive and the Bitter Herbs, and Broadway's The Tale of the Allergist's Wife. This new comedy featuring Mr. Busch himself as an out-of-work female impersonator who, when his elderly landlady dies in her sleep, takes on her identity in order to hang on to her valuable Greenwich Village townhouse. This "perfect" scheme goes awry and leads to a wild path of twists and reversals plotted by an eccentric rogues gallery of outrageous schemers. Expect Busch's signature blend of quick-witted banter and genderbending hijinks in this new play written specifically for Primary Stages from the master of Off-Broadway farce.

TBA
The fourth production in our 2013-2014 season is still under consideration at this time, but rest assured it will be a provocative new play.

"We are looking forward to our 29th Season, producing the best new works by American Playwrights which will include at least two world premieres and one New York City premiere," says Casey Childs, Founder & Executive Producer of Primary Stages. "We are thrilled to be working for the first time with playwright Chad Beguelin on his complex new comedy Harbor, which will be directed by one of our favorite returning directors, Mark Lamos. Eric Simonson, the director of Primary Stages past hit String of Pearls, will be directing and writing a new play about the New York Yankees which was conceived by Fran Kirmser and commissioned by Tony Ponturo. And it is always a joy to welcome back Charles Busch with his newest farce, which will star both Mr. Busch and Julie Halston and be directed by Carl Andress. Our 29th Season will include an exciting blend of stories and styles as we introduce some new American voices and welcome back a few old friends."
