SISTAS: The Musical Adds Second Saturday Performance and Thursday Talk Back Series

SISTAS-The-Musical-Adds-Second-Saturday-Performance-a-Thursday-Talk-Back-Series-20010101

SISTAS: The Musical, at St. Lukes Theatre (308 West 46th St.), opened in October of 2011 and was New York Times critic Ben Brantley's pick of the week, is now poised to add a second Saturday performance to their current schedule starting on March 17. Special group pricing will apply to that show only, ($35/person for groups of 10-49 and $32.50 for groups of 50+).

Thursday – 7:00pm

Saturday – 1:30pm and 4:30pm

Sunday – 4:30pm

Producers also recently begun a Thursday night Talk Back series in honor of Black History Month that now continues through March, in celebration of Women's History Month. The Talk Back series is hosted by a different personality each week. Signed on to moderate one of these Thursdays: Barbara Askins, CEO of the 125th St. BID, Barbara Smith, restauranteur/entrepreneur, Diane King, NY1 anchor/financial reporter and Sandra Bookman, WABC-TV reporter.

SISTAS is the story of five women in an African American family, who come togetherafter the death of their beloved grandmother. The play has been scoring repeat audiences that have come by plane, train and automobiles, as well as by thebusloads from as far away as California and Canada to see the show. For some the connection is deeply personal – they see themselves in the characters and in their stories. For others it is all about the music and the joy it awakens. But for all it is the sheer pleasure it evokes.

SISTAS stars five extraordinary performers: Jennifer Fouché as the feisty and outspoken Roberta; Tracey Conyer Lee as Gloria, a woman who has reclaimed joy through her faith in God; April Nixon as the uber-educatEd Simone and single mom to Lexi Rhoades' character, Tamika, a 17 year old who is on the verge of discovering life's many paths; and Heather, played by Amy Goldberger – the white sister-in-law who has married into the family and refuses to let color dictate her relationship with the group.

At the center of this uplifting story is the music, a playbook of songs made famous by artists that include Billie Holiday, Lena Horn, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Mary J Blige and others. Each song, perfectly selected, is an intricate part of the storytelling, helping to frame conversations on a range of topics from segregation, the civil rights and women's movement, to things like the meaning of love and control.

On any given night audiences can be heard singing a long, dancing in their seats, testifying or simply exploding with laughter. It has become an interactive experience.

SISTAS: The Musical is written by Fulbright Scholar and Columbia University Professor Dorothy Marcic, directed by Kenneth Ferrone, and produced by three-time Tony Award winner, Hinton Battle and Jenkay, LLC.
