LOST IN YONKERS

SYNOPSIS: When their widowed father leaves for work down south, teenage brothers Jay and Arty are left under the strict care of their authoritarian Grandma Kurnitz. Set during World War II, this Pulitzer Prize-winning memory play delves into the wounds inflicted by the matriarch's cruelty while highlighting the enduring power of familial love and resilience.

SEEKING:

Jay Kurnitz: Male. Caucasian. 16. Smart, witty, and observant with great comedic timing, but naive about what Uncle Louie does for a living. Navigates life with his strict grandmother and eccentric aunt alongside his brother, Arty, showing signs of maturity by the play's end.

Arty Kurnitz: Male. Caucasian. 13. Sensitive, likable, and charming with excellent comedic timing – his coping mechanisms for adjusting to living with his aunt and grandmother. Relies on his brother Jay for guidance.

Eddie Kurnitz: Male. Caucasian. 40s. A loving father to Jay and Arty, but struggling, conflicted, and caught between his obligations to his sons and his fraught relationship with his mother. Leaves his sons with her to settle a huge debt.

Grandma Kurnitz (Hannah): Female. Caucasian. 70s. Stern and domineering matriarch of the family. Had a very difficult childhood in Germany; and after losing 2 young children, she's closed herself off emotionally, employing tough disciplinary measures to teach survival to her 4 remaining children. Struggles to admit vulnerability or seek help. Has a German Accent.

Aunt Bella Kurnitz: Female. Caucasian. mid-30s. Warm-hearted but emotionally arrested, living with her mother and helps operate the family candy store. Forms a close bond with Jay and Arty, and yearns for a normal life with her own husband and children.

Uncle Louie Kurnitz: Male. Caucasian. mid to late 30s. Hiding from the mob with a bag of money. Slick and admired by Jay and Arty, though they are at times suspicious of him. He is quick to anger and sometimes nervous, but a wonderful uncle when he's relaxed. Tough and unafraid of Grandma.

Aunt Gert Kurnitz: Female. Caucasian. late 30s. Warm, loving, and brave despite her mother's harsh treatment, which has created a trauma-induced breathing pattern, causing her to suck in air in the middle of her sentences. Provides refuge for Bella when she runs away, without telling her mother.

SYNOPSIS: In 1942, in England, amidst bombings, a fading actor prepares to perform King Lear in the provinces with his ragtag troupe. Despite Sir's declining condition, his devoted dresser, Norman, is determined to get him onstage for his 227th performance. Their co-dependent relationship forms the heart of this tragicomic homage to the transformative power of theater.

Norman: (ROLE CAST – seeking potential replacement) Male. Any Ethnicity. 50s. Rigid, fastidious, and high-strung former actor. Steadfast and devoted dresser to Sir, stepping up to lead the company when Sir falls ill. He craves recognition from Sir, but ultimately, this is unrequited love. He finds comfort in his flask.

Her Ladyship: Female. Any Ethnicity. 45+. Sir's common-law (and younger) wife and the leading lady of the acting troupe. Once a beautiful aspiring actress, she lives in regret, resentment, and hurt.

Madge: (ROLE CAST – seeking potential replacement) Female. Any Ethnicity. 40s. Stage manager, also devoted to Sir for many years, with unrequited love for Sir. She runs a tight ship and is efficient and self-assertive. She clashes with Norman for Sir's attention and affection.

Irene: (ROLE CAST – seeking potential replacement) Female. Any Ethnicity. 20s. Overly ambitious novice actress infatuated with Sir and a burning passion for the stage and to become a leading lady. Her aspirations disrupt Norman's efforts to maintain order.

Geoffrey Thornton: Male. Any Ethnicity. 70s. Elderly actor seeking recognition from Sir.

Oxenby: (ROLE CAST – seeking potential replacement) Male. Any Ethnicity. Ageless. A pompous and frustrated amateur actor; moody, sullen, and antagonistic who challenges the dynamics within the company.

SYNOPSIS: Warren G. Harding seeks solace from the press and presidency by joining Henry Ford and Thomas Edison on their annual camping trip. Stranded in the woods, they discuss politics, ambition, family, and fame, showcasing three distinct personalities and world views. Inspired by an actual 1921 excursion, the play explores enduring issues and ideas still relevant today.

Thomas Alva Edison: (ROLE CAST – seeking potential replacement) Male. Caucasian. 70s+. A renowned American Inventor known for the phonograph, motion picture camera, and light bulb. Brilliant, innovative, with a sharp intellect and a bit crusty and irascible at times.
